Supporting the Institute of Islamic Studies and its projects

Research innovation that recalibrates intellectual and democratic space is resource intensive. The Institute thrives because of our donors who share our vision. All funds donated to the Institute are stewarded in light of our academic priorities organized by project. This allows donors to align their philanthropic supports to our collective shared commitments.

The Institute of Islamic Studies nurtures important institutions and initiatives that transform the study of Islam, Muslims and related areas of study into an enriching view of Canada and the world.  Our projects are so significant and pathbreaking that they have the imprimatur as academic priorities for the University of Toronto

The Muslims in Canada Archives (MICA)

A Canadian institution housed at the IIS, the Muslims in Canada Archives  records and preserves the contribution of Muslim Canadians to Canada’s vibrant heritage.  Support for MiCA will contribute to its expansion across the country to ensure the vibrant histories of Muslims will be preserved, coast to coast to coast.

The Structural Islamophobia Research Lab (SIRL)

The IIS supports cutting edge research that examines the ways in which Islamophobia is systemically enabled by the very institutions that govern Canada, that educate Canadians, and that make possible our market participation. This is a difficult area to research because evidence is often hidden behind national security and privacy laws, requiring well-trained scholars to develop creative research methodologies. Support for SIRL will sustain ongoing research in a time of rising Islamophobia in Canada and around the world.

Area of Greatest Need

The IIS sponsors a wide range of short- and long-term projects that chart new ground in areas that demand research investment.  The areas of greatest need at the IIS include:

  • Hearing Palestine: An intellectual hub at the Institute of Islamic Studies that centres the study of Palestine and facilitates advanced interdisciplinary research on Palestine, past, present, and future.
  • Islamic Art & Material Culture Collaborative. A Toronto-based collaboration between the IIS, the Aga Khan Museum, and the Royal Ontario Museum. This project curates public events, fosters interdisciplinary research on Islamic art and material culture, and supports students secure curatorial experience.
  • Reading Muslims.  A sustained disciplinary research endeavor that brings together local and international scholars on the place of textuality in Islamic Studies.
