Islamic Art and Material Cultures Collaborative (IAMCC)
Senior Fellow

The Institute of Islamic Studies issues a call for applications for a Senior Fellow for the Islamic Art and Material Cultures Collaborative (IAMCC). The IAMCC is a collaborative project between the IIS, the ROM and the Aga Khan Museum and engages faculty, curators, and the larger Toronto art historical community. The IAMCC sponsors an annual workshop series, and creates opportunities for students to undertake research and with faculty members and curators at the two partner museums 

For the 2021-2022 academic, the IAMCC will host one-to-three senior fellows who can integrate their own interests in Islamic art history with the work of IAMCC, the Aga Khan Museum and the ROM.  Senior Fellows will have the opportunity to:  

  • network with a global scholarly and curatorial community; 
  • collaborate on new and innovative research projects; and  
  • work with curators and academics in the design of annual workshop series 

Prerequisite: Applicants must be enrolled at the University of Toronto in a graduate level degree granting program related to IAMCC’s programmatic mission.

Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA) Project
Senior Fellow in Information Systems and Design 

The Muslims in Canada Archives is a project of the Institute of Islamic Studies. During the 2021-2022 academic year, it will be building out a digital platform that integrates background platforms supporting archival digitization, arrangement and description, and foreground platforms to engage a wide range of stakeholder communities.  As MiCA works with vendors to design and develop the multi-dimensional platform, we are looking for motivated and capable students interested in supporting that feature of the project.   

Eligible applicants are UofT enrolled students in MA or PhD programs with a proven record of interest in information management, with understandings and capacities in the following: 

  • Information Systems & Design (ISD) 
  • User Experience Design (UXD) 
  • Knowledge Management & Information Management (KMIM) 
  • Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems 

Preferred candidates will be: 

  • Familiar with information design process from discovery to deployment. 
  • Comfortable discussing technical build requirements, coding languages, web development frameworks, and their integrations.
  • Experienced working for or with digital agencies and consultancies.
  • Familiar with museum, curatorial, archival, education, library sectors, their technical requirements, and processes.

Reading Muslims & Islam in the City
Digital Productions Editor 

The Institute of Islamic Studies produces a series of online publications that target a wide range of audiences. Islam in the City offers a space for students in Southern Ontario and beyond to creatively reflect on “the Islamic” in the interstices of everyday life in cities like Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, and elsewhere. Additionally, the Reading Muslims Project features online written and audio content in the form of a regular e-zine and podcast production.  The Institute is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial, and innovative student who can integrate a wide academic interest in Islam and the Muslim experience with technical expertise and competence in digital productions. The nature of the work can be wide ranging, and includes pitch writing, copyediting, layout design, social media content development, and technical audio/video editing. It also requires a person with the soft skills necessary to collaborate on projects with different department representatives/professors, and enough curiosity to appreciate how current events and issues pertain to academic research and programming. Preferred applications will have the following qualifications 

  • Research capacities in fields related to the study of Islam and Muslim (e.g. humanities and interpretive social sciences). 
  • Experience with magazine or journal publication and/or curating magazine articles.
  • Familiarity with Zoom, MS Office 365 & OneDrive, Outlook, Social media management. 
  • Comfortable learning how to edit recordings and audio files (e.g. Adobe Audition, Audacity, etc.) for podcasts and other multimedia purposes.
  • Willing to learn how to manage content using WordPress.
