“Manitoba Muslims: A History of Resilience and Growth” Book Talk
MiCA hosts Ismael Mukhtar during Islamic Heritage Month as he discusses his new book “Manitoba Muslims: a History of Resilience and Growth”.
About this event Muslim communities have existed in Manitoba for well over a century, constantly growing and changing. Despite this, these groups, along with their triumphs and struggles, have been largely excluded from the broader Canadian and Manitoban narratives. This book seeks to fill some of those gaps. Join Ismael Mukhtar as he introduces his new book ‘Manitoba Muslims: A History of Resilience and Growth’. In discussion with MiCA’s Archivist, Moska, we will dive deeper not only into some themes and stories from the book, but also Mukhtar’s process of finding and writing them.

His extensive and wide-ranging community contributions include serving as president of the Manitoba Islamic Association, vice-president of the Muslim Student Association, editor-in-chief of the Manitoba Muslim Magazine, volunteer imam, and counsellor. He is an Islamic scholar, regularly lecturing and writing on Muslim issues. Mukhtar lives in Winnipeg with his wife and three children. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).
Moska Rokay , Digital Humanities Research Fellow, Institute of Islamic Studies at the University of Toronto Moska Rokay is the Digital Humanities Research Fellow at the Institute of Islamic Studies (University of Toronto) tasked with coordinating the Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA). She is an advocate for community-centered, activist archives, especially of diaspora communities. She completed her Master of Information at the University of Toronto (2019). In 2020, she was the recipient of the ACA New Professional Award and Archivaria’s Gordon Dodds Student Paper Prize. She currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Archives Association of Ontario (AAO) as Director Without Portfolio.
About Manitoba Muslims Manitoba Muslims: A History of Resiliance and Growth is both a look back at the history of Muslims in the province of Manitoba, and a look forward into the future. The Muslims of Manitoba have a presence that reaches back beyond a century. They are a fast-growing demographic and continue to make many positive contributions to their community and country. The history of Manitoba Muslims is an integral part of the history of Manitoba and Canada; with a better collective understanding of our history, all Canadians can work together to create a more respectful, tolerant, and welcoming nation. About the Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA): The Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA), a collaborative and participatory initiative at the Institute for Islamic Studies (IIS), provides a platform for the missing Muslim voices in Canada. MiCA acquires, organizes, preserves, and makes accessible records of and about Canadian Muslim individuals and organizations that possess enduring value for the preservation of the history and documentary heritage of Muslims in Canada.
About the Series: This event is part of the “Community Collaborations Learning Series,” a series of collaborative events where MiCA hosts a discussion or talk with an archive or related public history/community storytelling/cultural heritage initiative. These events allow MiCA to leverage its platform and audience to showcase the multitude of archives and archives-adjacent initiatives to a wider audience and learn from other related initiatives about community-centred, decolonial, anti-racist, and radical archival practice.
