Press Release: SSHRC Partnership Grant for Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA)

The IIS is pleased to announce that Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council has awarded a Partnership Development Grant to support the development and growth of the Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA). MiCA is a project of the IIS in partnership with a number of national and local archival institutions, such as the University of Toronto Libraries, Libraries and Archives Canada, and Archives Ontario. Importantly, MiCA is a participatory archives with a steering committee comprised of representatives from the following community partner organizations: The Black Muslim Initiative (BMI), the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW), Inspirit Foundation, the Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANAL), the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), and the Tessellate Institute (TTI).

The Partnership Development Grant is will support MiCA’s aim to provide an archives that reflect the complex history of Muslims in Ontario. At the same time, MiCA will seed similar endeavours across Canada, focusing Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador during this grant period. As MiCA builds its holdings for central and eastern Canada, it will begin work on cementing similar endeavours in each Canadian province so as to preserve and steward the wide and varied stories of Muslims across Canada for future generations.
