We’re pleased to share that Professor Anver Emon (Director, Institute of Islamic Studies) has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on the Charitable Sector (ACCS).
Prof Emon’s appointment comes as the Office of the Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson continues its systemic examination of the Charities Directorate’s audit process. The appointment of diverse members to the committee, which the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue points out in the press release, is a move towards increasing representation that’s reflective of the charitable sector.
As co-author of “Under Layered Suspicion” (along with Dr. Nadia Z. Hassan of NCCM), Prof Emon was responsible for extensive research that provided evidence to longstanding concerns about bias and prejudice in the selection and audits of Muslim-led Charities.
While “Under Layered Suspicion” focused on Muslim-led charities, its findings have been echoed by other marginalized community groups. Emon will leverage academic scholarship and research rigor to support a more inclusive regulatory environment for Canada’s diverse charitable sector.
